Surround

So my husband has surround sound and I just can not hear the difference - maybe it is the brand and theone we got because we got the cheapest kind but even still - i just can not hear the difference the backspeakers are just so quite - I can't hear that they are even on sometimes - and I just don't see what the big deal is and the difference in sound.
